The Flow State Is a Preparation
How to create effortlessly
Something I learned today after watching Adrian Jemale performing Billie Jeans by Michael Jackson with perfect moves on The Voice America: The flow is a preparation. It comes with practice. You don’t just get into the flow, you must practice days and nights to achieve the flow state every time you perform your art.
That sounds hard but all you need is intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the inner voice that urges you to do something. That voice won’t quiet down unless you practice your art. What propels intrinsic motivation? Short answer: Curiosity. A deep desire to know it all, to understand a matter inside out, to leave no stone unturned. Backed by curiosity, you can sail through anything — the hardship, boredom, doubt, fear, anxiety to master an art.
No one can teach you to be curious. It’s what only you have access to. I believe everyone has a propensity to do something well, whether it is drawing, painting, writing, coding, building, speaking, podcasting, etc. Talent is encoded in our brains. It’s part of our gene, passed down from hundreds of generations. We get it the moment we’re born. For that, we must thank our parents, our ancestors who sown the seed we now reap, and we must learn to use it well.
The seed of flow state is inside each of us. You don’t need any trick to achieve the flow. Just follow your heart. Do what you’re most excited about. That’s the only way to get to it.
